IIS Rio received the Australian researches Hugh Possingham, Morena Mills, Hawthorne Beyer (University of Queensland) and Ascelin Gordon (University of Melbourne) for the workshop on “Multi-criteria spatial priorisation for restoration of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest”. The event was held between 1 and 3 November 2015 at IIS Rio.

The meeting joined twenty experts, including members from the Brazilian government, academia and NGO’s. The group discussed three initiatives:

> to establish a partnership between IIS Rio and the University of Queensland to work on the spatial optimisation planning for forest restoration in the coming years;

> to develop high impact scientific articles; and

> to give support for the implementation of the Brazilian National Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation (PLANAVEG).

This was the first formal interaction between researchers from IIS Rio and the University of Queensland. The increase of such collaboration was key for the creation of the IIS AU in 2019.
